Firewood all Done!

After visiting the horticultural nursery before lunch, and planting the Spartan apple tree just after lunch, the girls and I went into the shed and finished stacking the firewood.

I still have to tidy up a bit, but that can easily be done on one of my days off, although this coming week is going to be utter crazy with us having to almost commute to Haderslev in connection with my fater-in-law's funeral, and preparations for it.

Some of the pieces were too small and/or odd to stack, so we just piled them up in front of the three stacks, and they are going in the stove first (but not until we have used up the last of the old logs, which may take the rest of this month, depending on the weather).

Firewood Galore

As mentioned yeasterday, I got six cubic metres of firewood delivered (as the avid reader of my ramblings will have noticed, one cubic metre more than last summer - because we almost could not stretch that batch over the entire winter).

This picture shows the pile after I started moving some of it into the shed:

And this was the amount of wood already put in the shed. Anna stacked the wood against the back wall while I moved more into the shed.

Today, first I moved some old dry wood from the shed to the conservatory, to make space for the new stacks, and then continued putting the new wood into the shed. When Lea came home from school, she took over where Anna left yesterday, and the stack against the wall grew notably.

As you can see, we have plenty to stack, yet.

And the pile in front of the shed has shrunk to pitiful dimensions.

I should be able to move the remains in about an hour's time of work, and then it is mostly up to the girls to get the stuff stacked neatly inside the shed.

My wood pusher promised to bring a log splitter and help me get the logs I am storing in front of the shed split, so I can finally put the wood to use. This is a great relief, as it would require very hard work tro get them split manually, and I shall have to reserve a day off for this purpose as soon as possible, to avoid too bad/cold weather.

Tasks Ahead

The thing about owning a large stretch of ground around your house is that there is always something else you need to get done.

These two bushes are going to be killed off, leaving space for an apple tree and some raspberry bushes.

I am probably not going to have time for doing it until Monday, though, as I still have some weedkiller to spread tomorrow, and some dandelions to remove from the various lawns.

And then there is this pile of firewood that needs splitting before I can put it in the shed.

I hope to be able to borrow a hydraulic log splitter from the guy who delivers the bulk of our firewood, but that will have to wait until next month, at least.

And then there is the extension of the lily/flower bed at the veggie garden.

I am not going to get bored this summer, for sure!

Working with Wood.

We have been very busy getting 5 cubic metres of firewood into the shed and stacked up nicely.

It was delivered Wednesday evening, and as the weather forecast promised rain Saturday, it  was necessary to get it under a roof right away.

I was moving the wood on my wheelbarrow, while the kids stacked it up.

We got everything into the shed by Friday evening, and the last bit stacked up today.

Cutting the Wood!

I was able to commandeer this monstrosity in order to get some of my cheap firewood cut to useable lengths, so no big investment this time.

Only catch was that I had to fetch and bring myself, and assemble the gizmo, as it is quite new, and has been sitting in its box in the shed of one of my soon-to-be gaming pals (he has been in the process of getting married, siring a son, and moving the last many months).

I wanted to take a pic of the pile of wood I cut already, but the camera batteries died just after this picture was taken, and I really did not want to go out in the wet snowfall once more after replacing them, just to take a picture of a pile of firewood. Call me lazy, but that was just not going to happen then.

I think, today I went through just about 1/4 of the wood I need to cut; it should not take too long to get the rest done - except for that we are going to visit my in-laws this weekend to help them tidy up their garden after the storm/gale that hit Denmark last weekend (some dead trees and bushes need to get cut up, for which I am bringing my chainsaw, and my trailer to bring home some of the wood), which means a pause from the domestic chores.

I Need to Expand my Toolbox...

I have to cut all this wood down to a size that fits in my new stoves.

Yesterday, I spent about one hour sawing - by hand - one basket's worth of firewood, and my right shoulder is thoroughly busted today.

I shall see if I can borrow a powered saw from one of my acquaintances - otherwise I shall have to spend in the vicinity of DKK 4000. So much for saving money by buying cheap firewood...

Well, at least one third of the wood could be used right away.
