Blood Eagle: Scenario Test 1

As announced, Ulrik and I tested my four player scenario for Horisont VIII today. As the two attacking warbands have different objectives, the playtest did not run quite as I expected (Ulrik controlling both attacking warbands meant that he could  coordinate their efforts, which made things a bit harder for the defenders), but it gave me a hunch about what to keep, and what to change before the convention. That being said, I am going to solo test the scenario with the changes, before I decide on the final form.

As only the defenders and the relief force start the scenario on the table, I set up the two warbands according to the scenario rules.

We were almost through Turn 1, before Ulrik managed to roll a 6 for one of the raiders - thus enabling him to place his first model on the table.

He placed the Uruk on the side edge, almost as close to the relief force's edge than to the settlement, which I don not think will happen with four players. but he clearly intended to cut off the advance of the Dwarves (and the retreat of the defenders and the civilians).

As the raiders can be activated as normal on the turn they arrive (I may want to change that, allowing them to be activated only when they start the turn on the table), the Uruk ran towards the middle of the table.

I reacted by starting to move my archers into position to shoot at the Uruk.

Another Uruk arrived to threaten my lines of communication. My archers started getting nervous about the situation.

Finally, Rolf the old Huskarl approached the settlement. My spearmen moved to intercept.

Meanwhile, the Uruk-Hai continued pouring onto the table, while my archers started looking over their shoulders for some muscle support.

Úlf came sprinting past Rolf, not wanting to let the grey wolf get away with all the glory!

Caedmon answered the archers' plead for support.

Aedelric ordered Baldric to help him guard the left flank of the archers. The peasant tried (in vain) to hit Rolf with his sling.

Ulf pressed on, engaging Eadgar up close and personal.

And Sigurdr arrived to lead his raiders.

The Uruks assembled behind the small hill.

Daegberht ran to the aid of Eadgar.

Baradin was on the verge of getting in contact with the forward defenders, but the Uruks swiftly moved to intercept him. My archers sent a volley after Urgrat, but they only managed to scratch him.

Eadgar was dispatched by a Throwing Axe from Úlf, and afterwards Daegberht was downed by a hard Axe hit to the helmet. Úlf was having a ball.

The situation from the viewpoint of the advancing Dwarves. The Uruk-Hai seemed intent on driving a wedge between the defenders and the relief force. I am certain, we shall see a more direct approach from the player(s) controlling the Uruks at Horisont (their objectives should assure that)!

Ivar arrived on the outskirts of the settlement.

The last raiders, Halfdan and Thorstein arrived from another direction than the others. Being the Hlaford of the settlement, Aedelric had to consider the safety of his peasants, and ran back to help Daegberht - but to no avail; Daegberht was captured by Úlf soon after.

The following minutes saw one more of my warriors despatched, my archers again failing to down a single enemy with volley fire, and we decided to call it a day and a combined victory for the raiders. It was getting late in the afternoon, I had to cook supper, and the situation looked bleak for the defenders. Had the two attacking warbands been controlled by different players, it would have been interesting to continue and find the overall victor, but as both were controlled by a single player, there really was no point in pressing on.

It was, as always with Blood Eagle, a well-flowing and enticing game (and was, as always, marred by my ineptitude to pass a Fate Test), and I got some very valuable pointers for fine-tuning the scenario rules (and we agreed on some house rules for making it slightly easier for missile troops to actually make an impact on the game).

The game also made me think about getting some scatter terrain purchased and painted (barrels, crates, water-throughs, etc.), as I would like my tables to look more 'alive'. That will have to wait until after Horisont, though.

Blood Eagle: Preparing Scenario Test

Tomorrow, I have an appointment for play-testing the four-player scenario I am preparing for Horisont VIII. We are going to control two warbands each, which may influence the outcome, compared with a game where each player has only one set of objectives (especially the attackers will have to compete for victory points), but the test primarily has to show if some adjustments to the way the relief force and the raiders are brought onto the table.

The defenders and the civilians will have to set up within 3" of a building, except the farmer himself (guy with sling), who may set up anywhere in any field.

Any civilians must stay within 3" of a building until at least one model from the relief force has moved within 3" of at least one of the civilians. As soon as that has happened, any civilians within 3" of a warrior (defender or relief force) may be moved with the warrior. If a civilian finds him/herself further than 3" away from a warrior at the beginning of a turn, he/she MUST run towards the nearest building.

The raiders are spread all over the area, searching for easy prey and plunder. They are brought onto the table in the following manner: When a model could be activated, roll a d6 for it:

  • On turn 1, the model needs to score 6 to arrive on the table
  • On turn 2, the model needs to score 5+ to arrive on the table
  • On turn 3, the model needs to score 4+ to arrive on the table
  • On turn 4, the model needs to score 3+ to arrive on the table
  • On turn 5, the model needs to score 2+ to arrive on the table
  • On turn 6, the model arrives per default.
Each raider can only attempt to arrive on the table once per turn. It should be marked off-table as activated if it fails.

A raider who arrives on the table may be placed anywhere on any of the 3 table edges not used by the relief force, and it may perform an activation right away.

The obvjectives of the raiders are to kill and/or capture as many civilians and/or enemy warriors as possible.

The defenders and the relief force primarily scores by bringing civilians to safety by escorting them off the table via the far table edge (from where the relief force enters). They will also score some victory points by killing opponents, but not as many per enemy model killed as the opponents score by killing them.

The Four Raiders

I think I forgot to post the family photo of the Vikings finished so far.

And, no, I still have not done the clasps on the 'baldric'...

Blood Eagle: Ivar Finished!

A couple of days ago, I thought I would never get this one finished. It felt like I was painting om and on, and yet still more details were untouched by the brushes.

Alone today, I have spent 3 whole hours to get the last touches done (and that is without painting and decorating the base).

And, yet, I just realized that I have forgotten to paint the clasp on the 'baldric'... shall have to mend that after the weekend, as I am attending Åcon in Esbjerg, and I am working this night and tomorrow night, so I shall not have time for anything but getting my camp equipment ready (tent, air mattress, air pump, sleeping bag, beer, cooler bag, etc.).

Update, 2019-10-26:

I forgot all about writing up the colour breakdown for Ivar, and by now I have completely forgotten what colours I used. As he is not part of a uniformed group, it does not really matter, though-

Blood Eagle: First Warband at Full Strength!

As promised, the entire warband in all its unpainted plastic glory.

I hope to manage priming these guys tomorrow afternoon, but as I shall be at work tonight, and hence be sleeping tomorrow, I don't know if I shall have time for it.

Blood Eagle: Ivar, the Last Viking

Ivar is now built and up to speed with the rest of the warband.

Body, arms, head, and quiver are from the Medieval Archer set, and the hand with the axe from the Gripping Beas Viking Hirdmen set.

He brings the warband roster up to a full basic 200 pts, 6 figures, which is a manageable number to get ready for the table within a foreseeable time.

The conquest heads seem to have some cloth around the neck (which really ought not be there, given the sculpt of the torsos), but I guess I shall paint it up as the unbleached linen of the særk (under-tunic).

Below you will find a couple more pictures of Ivar from different angles.

As you can see, the archers have the (for Vikings historically correct) sword 'baldric' - but no swords or other sidearms to put there.

I guess, I could have placed the axe there, and sculpted a loop/sheath for it, but I opted for the 'in hand' solution this time.

Another detail on these is, most of them have a short, half-sleved 'over tunic' that can be painted as the in Blood Eagle ever present 'leather byrnie' (læderbrynje), which is another reason why I was keen on getting the Medieval Archers set.

I shall probably construct some warriors with hand weapon/shield from some of these bodies in the future. The bows can be used on other models, like the un-armoured Dark Age Warriors, or even on some mail-clad Viking Hirdmen models.

The set contains both short and long bows in sufficient numbers for all the models, so a LOT of bowmen can be constructed, using models from other sets!

Ivar has the following stats:

Fate 4+, FV +2, SV +2, Speed +0, Pagan

Læderbrynje + Let Hjælm, jagtbue, økse

In the meantime, I have put the second helping of filler on the bases of the entire warband, and they should be ready for primer tomorrow, when I get up after sleeping (I work night watch tonight).

I shall post a line-up of the entire warband later this evening, so stay tuned!

Blood Eagle: Conquest Medieval Archers

I got these in the mail yesterday, just in time, as the rest of my warband is almost ready for primer.

Now I can get startted on Ivar, the last missing member of the crew.

Below are the sprues laid out to dry, after I washed them in hot water with detergent, and rinsed them thoroughly, first in clean hot water, then cold water to get rid of any soap residue.

I am a bit confused, as to why Conquest Games chose to have only 28 minis in this set; the box was clearly designed to contain about double the number of sprues, and at a price of £20, the per mini price is almost double that of similar sets (their own Norman Infantry set contains 44 figures at the same price). Well, this set will cater for my archery needs for a long time, so I shall not whine on about this for long... ;o)

Blood Eagle: Warband Status

So, with five minis assembled, I have spent a total of 174 points.

I am aiming for 200 points for my starting warband, which means that I have 26 points left to spend on a warrior with a bow. I am too tired to jiggle stats and points right now, but it should be easily doable.

I just ordered the Conquest Games plastic Medieval Archers from Renedra (with som Saxon Tents, and two frames of waddle fencing).

The plans for the weekend are:

  1. Remove moldlines from Ulf
  2. Sculpt leather straps/loops holding some axes
  3. Add filler to the bases
  4. Maybe take a group shot
I am currently in my 5-day work week (night watch), and I probably shall not make more much progress this week (but that only means, the archer may have time to catch up with the rest of the crew). It will be good to take a few days off cutting and gluing plastic, though.

Blood Eagle: Torstein WIP

I ran into some problems building Rolf, so while the poly cement is drying on a repair, I am building another member of Sigurdr's warband:

Torstein, young warrior

Fate 5+, FV +1, SV +1, Speed +0, Pagan

Light Helm and Shield

Javelins
Axe, One-Handed

As I am in short supply of models with leather byrnies, I opt to use light helms instead - as it gives the same level of protecgtion, rules-wise.

I shall be ordering a box of Conquest Games' relatively new plastic Medieval Archers next month and add a bow-armed warrior to the party (I was reluctant to do so, as I have not been impressed with Conquest's former plastic releases, but a recent posting on LAF of some nicely painted archers has swayed me), and with Torstein he will form the warband's potential for engaging the enemy from afar, while Sigurdr and Rolf will be the hard-hitters.

I intend to add a couple more raiders with light gear to fulfil the role of, well, raiders, going for the spoils and soft targets, supported and helped by Torstein and the archer, while Sigurdr and Rolf (hopefully) keep the more dangerous opposition at bay.

I am going to add a greenstuff leather 'loop'
holding the axe,
but the poly cement has to settle, first.
Couple of more pics:
