Making Some Arrows...

A couple of pics of Lea varnishing five arrow shaft for some home-made arrows.

The other five shafts are Anna's, and although they started working on these arrows May 1st, they have not yet finished the shafts; the arrows need to be sanded with very fine grain sand paper in between 4-5 layers of varnish, and it is difficult to find time in between homework, school choir, time with schoolmates, riding, and other leisure activities on school nights, and in the weekends we often do something away from home.

Furthermore, Lea strained her ankle in the garden trampoline last week, and has not been able to work in the workshop.

Anna, on the other hand, has carved nocks, and added the second layer of varnish to hers. We use the 'self-nock' method, to avoid glueing plastic nocks to our wooden arrow shafts

LEGO Elves Terrain Project, Part 4

I went to Svendborg today to get some paints from a craft store that match the colours of the LEGO Elves bases.

I also visited a DIY market to get some water-based varnish to use for arrows (I ordered tools and materials for making wooden arrows yesterday). Apparently, arrows need 4-5 layers of varnish, being sanded with a very fine grain of sandpaper in between layers.

The varnish is meant for indoor use, but I hope it will prove good enough for arrows - we are not going to shoot in rough weather conditions, anyway, so with several layers, it should be able to withstand handling.

Longbows Oiled

Both my trusty old one-piece 'peasant's' bow, and Anna's new fancy-pants two-piece longbow have been given two treatments of linseed oil, and should be ready for an outing one of the next days, weather permitting.

Skeleton Warriors for GoB - WIP 6

After a weekend all booked up by practical assignments - and a field trip to Jutland to pick up some LARP equipment for me and the girls, AND the first real longbow for Anna (which now means that I shall have to acquire equipment for making arrows, as buying ready-made ones is far too expensive; luckily, I already have been pointed to a Danish store that sells such stuff, so as soon as my tax refund has arrived, I shall order tools and materials) - I found some time for painting a bit more today.

I have decided to use the old metal armoured skeleton with the scythe as leader for the unit, which means that one of the axe-wielding skellies will be relieved of its duties for now. If I find a suitable armoured skeleton with shield and sword, the leader can be replaced and instead be used as a Blacksoul or part of another unit.

Using the metal mini will delay getting the unit on the table, but if I can get the warriors done, concentrating on the leader should make it possible to get him painted fairly quickly.
