GoB Viking Army (Blood Gorged Proxies) WIP 8.

I got the Dark Age Warriors primed yesterday, before going to the 150th Anniversary of my childhood school (meeting a lot of old faces).

No further progress to report, as the nice spring weather called me to the garden most of today.

The Attic Gets Cosier!

The first leather armchair for the Cosy Corner in Argonor's Attic has been acquired!

I also have an appointment to pick up another tomorrow.

They have cost me DKK 50,- each (plus a bit of petrol/gasoline), so all in all a bargain for a couple of comfy chairs for patrons to sit and read rules, sip cold drinks, or having a cup of coffee/tea.

I do not expect to organize Attic Attack III until after the summer holidays, as my vacation is very early this year, and I need to prepare a lot of things for a camping trip to Northern Italy.

GoB Viking Army (Blood Gorged Proxies) WIP 7.

My collection is growing!

I picked up this from the local post outlet (at SuperBrugsen). I plan to use this as my camp for the Viking army, when it has grown to a size to fight on its own.

I now need to find some models of Oseberg tents, and buy some boxes, barrels, and civilians to use as the baggage train.

GoB Viking Army (Blood Gorged Proxies) WIP 6.

Finally, these two units are ready for priming (although the filler on the bases must be left to dry, first).

I should be able to get some white primer on them one of the next days, White, because I am going to quick-paint them with 1 layer, shaded with a Devlan Mud wash (or the equivvalent). I find this the only way I can paint units for an army within an acceptable time-frame. Small elite units may still be treated with the whole palette (3-4 layers), but bread-and-butter units like these warriors just have to gear up and get ready for battle!

GoB Viking Army (Blood Gorged Proxies) WIP 5.

Managed to do a bit today.

Only shields and filler on bases missing on the second unit of Warriors (Brutes).

GoB Game: Dwarves vs Undead, Take Two.

Just after the two games of JDMG, we rigged a table for GoB (yes, we actually managed 3 games in one afternoon!), and threw our armies into the fray.

The Dwarves again were the most aggressive party, and I could set up most of my shambling hordes after the enemy deployed.

As much of my army moves pretty fast, I was confident that I could play a 'refused flank', and pillage the enemy Baggage Train, long before the vertically challenged could reach my side of the board.

Up until now, my 'main battle line' (consisting of just my Skeleton Warriors and a Chariot - 24 points 'skirmishes' do not lend themselves well to battle tactics) had only advanced a few paces, but as a block of Dwarves moved forward, I countered them with a charge of the Chariot.

All of a sudden, the remaining Dwarven host surged forward, threatening to engulf the chariot.

The Undead Knights charged in, while the second Chariot continued circling  the flank, and the Ghouls closed in on the Baggage Train.

As usual, when the forces meet, all hell broke loose.

I sorely needed one more formed unit in my battle line.

Outnumbered, I would have had to roll exceptionally well to come out on top. Neddless to say, I didn't.

First, the Chariot was destroyed...

...then, the Warriors all but wiped out...

...and the Knights decimated.

At this point, the battle was all but lost, but the Ghouls did manage to pillage the Baggage Train...

...before the final curtain.

Conclusions after 2 battles:

The Undead suffer immensely from the Dwarves' high Morale values; the Undead are 'Scary', which should make enemy units lose models when contact is made, but this rarely happens for the Dwarves, and thus the points cost for the Undead is relatively high, compared to the impact they make.

24 points really do not buy you enough units to have tactical flexibility; my battle plan worked, but it also drew at least one too many units away from the battle line, and my second chariot never got to play a part. Expensive units must get stuck in at all cost, delivering some value for money. Concentrate your attack, and do as much damage as possible - which also means that you should strive to be the one engaging, as the musician confers an extra Attack Die when doing so. and., of course, some of your units may have the 'Charge' ability.

I had one more unit than my opponent; I probably could have faced the Dwarves with 4 units and still have had my Ghouls run round the flank. This game severely punishes being outnumbered, especially when you field formed units that do not perform well against flank attacks. Big mistake on my part, but at least that is another lesson learned.

I seriously doubt, though, that it is possible to make a 24 pts Undead force that can beat the Dwarves, without the Dwarf player making blatant mistakes, and the Undead player rolling better than average on his Attack and Defense Dice. Or at least better than I do.

GoB Viking Army (Blood Gorged Proxies) WIP 4.

Following another game of GoB between my Lords of Undeath, and Ulolkish/Duregar's Dwarves (which will be reported in detail), I decided to re-prioritize the sequence of units I am going to prepare for the Viking army.

Thus, I spent most of Friday assembling and basing Gripping Beast Dark Age Wariors (with a few bits from the Viking Hirdmen set thrown in), to make 2 units of 10 warriors each.

They are going to count as Blood Gorged Brutes in the GoB army, and can be used as 2 points of Warriors in SAGA (leaving 4 for ½ point to be easily supplemented to full srength).

I plan om using them as Allies for my Lords of Undeath (forming 1/3 of 36 points); that way I can expand my Undead Command and Support section, while at the same time get my Viking army started.

Picture is a bit blurred, due to inadequate lighting, and I managed to cut out two warriors from the front unit, but as they are in a state of partial assembly, anyway, it is no big loss.

I am at work (night watch) right now, and shall probably sleep most of Saturday, so I do not expect to finish assembling the last 8-9 minis tomorrow. Sunday we are off to Copenhagen, where Anna is participating in a Music School concert in Tivoli, playing the trumpet, and I have to work the night between Sunday and Monday, and this may further delay finishing the second unit.
